PopCap Games made and released the tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies in 2009. The game was first made available for Windows and Mac OS X. Since then, it has been made available on platforms, handhelds, and mobile phones. In this game, the player is a homeowner during a zombie apocalypse. A group of zombies comes at the player from several alternate lanes, and they have to protect their home by planting things that shoot zombies or hurt them in some other way. To buy plants, the player gathers something called “sun.” It’s game over for the player if a zombie gets to the house on any lane.

George Fan made Plants vs. Zombies. He first thought of it as a more defense-focused follow-up to his 2001 fish simulator game Insaniquarium. He then turned it into a tower defense game where plants fight zombies. It was based on the video games Magic: The Gathering and Warcraft III, as well as the movie Swiss Family Robinson. Plants vs. Zombies was made over the course of three and a half years. The main artist was Rich Werner, the game was coded by Tod Semple, and the music was written by Laura Shigihara. The tutorial was made to be easy and spread out across Plants vs. Zombies so that it would appeal to both new and experienced players.
