Bush Rescue takes place in the Australian farmland of the Southern Rivers, which is split up into many smaller areas, such as Bush Rescue Headquarters, the town of Burramudgee, and other inhabited areas. As an open world game that doesn’t follow a strict path, the player can choose where to go and how to complete tasks. During most of the game, the player is on foot, but there are times when they can handle trucks, go-karts, mortar launchers, mechanical body suits called “Bunyips,” and other vehicles and weapons.

As you complete tasks, such as helping people in town, delivering items from one place to another, destroying mission-critical objects, and beating certain enemies or bosses, the game moves forward. Once a player has finished a few normal missions, they are given a job that is very important to the story and, when completed, opens up new areas. His two signature weapons are his twin boomerangs, which he can throw alone or together to attack enemies, do a glide after jumping or falling, move objects to make or clear paths, and use items to move around. Ty can also use a bite attack, in which he charges the nearest enemy, crate, or item and chomps it hard with his jaw. By chaining bites together, he can also get to secret parts of things, like in Sonic games with the Homing Attack. Opals, the game’s currency, can be used to buy new boomerangs at Sly’s Boomerang Shop in Burramudgee. Each boomerang has a different range of combat and usefulness.
